Motorcycle legend Wayne Gardner sells rural retreat

The motorcycle legend Wayne Gardner has sold his rarely used NSW South Coast retreat.

His hobby cattle farm at Meroo Meadow, near Berry, fetched $2 million plus through Cherylee Elliott and Shane Hilaire at Ray White Berry.

The 57 hectare property had been where Wayne taught his teenage sons Remy and Luca to ride motorbikes when they were four and two. It comes with four bedroom renovated farmhouse.

The family relocated to Spain several years ago to focus on Remy's international riding ambitions. Remy recently scored his second career Moto2 world championship points earlier this month after what was described as "a controlled and sensible ride in a sodden German GP at the Sachsenring."

Wayne, who won a string of grand prix events around the globe and was 500cc world champion in 1987, and his wife Toni bought the property around 13 years ago as a retreat from their hectic lifestyle when he was car racing in Japan.

His young sons had already shown an interest in motorcycles, with little quad bikes for the park near their home in Manly. Gardner was born in 1959 at Wollongong, and becoming the first Australian to win motorcycling's premier class, earned him the nickname The Wollongong Whiz.

There are fertile soils at the foothills farm with permanent water from springs. It has a carrying capacity of around 50 breeders with steel yard facilities and crush.

There is also a huge private lake stocked with bass.

The Ray White Berry agency marketing noted extensive improvements had been made to the picturesque property with new dams, garage and workspace.

It has been sold to Sydney eye surgeon Gary Schiller and professional non-executive director, Diana Eilert.

"It was an opportunity to secure an enviable farm in a great location on the NSW South Coast, just 10 minutes to Berry and Nowra and only 20 minutes to Seven Mile Beach," Cherylee Elliott said.

The boss of Cranswick Wines Australia, Graham Cranswick-Smith, has sold his Milsons Point penthouse pre-auction.

He's bought another penthouse over in the eastern suburbs.

McGrath Neutral Bay agents Jordan Black and Nigel Mukhi secured the Milsons Point sale after having $3.9 million hopes. It sold to a family from the Macarthur region who plan on leasing it out for a couple of years and then downsize to it.

Showcasing over 300 sqm of indoor and outdoor living, the Mirvac built penthouse has four bedrooms, two renovated limestone bathrooms and his home office.

A wraparound entertainers' balcony offers 270 degree views of the Harbour Bridge.

There's also an upper level expansive alfresco sun deck with jacuzzi.

Graham paid $3.58 million for the Milsons Point apartment in February last year, just weeks after he sold his McMahon Point trophy mansion, Villa Medusa, to tech guru Daniel Petre and his wife Carolyn.

Cranswick-Smith founded Cranswick Wines in 1991 when he initiated a management buy-out of Diageo's bulk winemaking facility in the Riverina region of New South Wales.

Since then Graham has transformed from producing bulk wine for major Australian producers to producing and marketing it's own broad range of Australian varietal wines. It recently won gold medals at the 2016 China Wine & Spirit Best Value Awards.

The family name Cranswick is thought to derive from Crane’s Wyke (the village of cranes) in Yorkshire, as recorded in the medieval Domesday Book (England 1066).

Powerbox Australia managing director Marc Rutty and wife Helen have emerged as the buyers of the Potts Point apartment of art patrons Lizanne and Julian Knights at $8 million in an off-market sale through Richardson & Wrench.

Lizanne and Julian had bought the three bedroom, three bathroom Villard apartment from the late car dealer Ray Lintott and wife Penny for $6.17 million in 2011.

The Lintott's had paid $7.4 million for the apartment in the Ercole Palazetti grand Parisian inspired building Villard in 2008.

Lizanne and Julian outlaid $7.4 million last year for the Gunnis family, renovated Victorian era Italianate villa, Oakburn in nearby Elizabeth Bay.

Julian has more than 30 years' experience in the financial services industry and is the founding partner of private-equity group Ironbridge. He is on the board of the Biennale of Sydney and former chairman of the Sydney Dance Company.

Rutty and wife Helen previously lived in Wahroonga before selling The Briars on Eastern Road late last year for $4.3 million to a Chinese family.

A lover of Bondi Beach apartments, fund manager Will Vicars couldn't help himself when the Pacific Bondi development was completed.

He made headlines in 2013 when he broke the Australia apartment record, having bought two adjoining two-storey "lighthouse" penthouses off-the-plan for a combined $21.9 million.

And now he's extended on his purchases, spending another $11 million on another recently completed apartment on the top floor of the Campbell Parade complex.

The well-connected Vicars - who also owns property on Seven Shillings Beach, Point Piper, Queen Street, Woollahra and Horderns Road, Bowral - is the chief investment officer of boutique fund manager Caledonia Investments.

Director David Atkins intent on moving from Manly

$

He might have only bought it a year ago, but Australia's most awarded producer, choreographer and director David Atkins is already intent on shuffling on from his Manly family home.

He paid $5.4 million last July for the grand 1908 family residence that has been listed for August 20 auction.

Atkins and Elli married early last year at the Whale Beach hotspot, Jonah's in a wedding that featured passing light plane with a banner reading 'I love you 1000 kisses deep.'

The five bedroom home sits on the private 903 sqm parcel with landscaped gardens designed by Annie Wilkes including lawn lined with Manchurian pear trees. There's views of the harbour from the entertaining terrace and the numerous balconies.

The agents, RED property agents Richard Davies and Luke Newby know the property having marketed it when last sold. But they aren't confirming $6 million plus hopes.

Atkins created and performed in one of the first successful Australian musicals, Hot Shoe Shuffle, in 1993. The production later transferred to London's Queen's Theatre.

He has starred in, produced, directed, choreographed and created more than 20 musicals in Australia, Britain, the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Atkins is best remembered for his work on the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

His contribution to the Australian events industry earned him a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2003.

He also worked on the Ceremonies of the Doha 2006 Asian Games, the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the 2010 Winter Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies, where the Opening Ceremony earned three Emmy Awards.

When Atkins struck out on his own as a producer, he risked his own money – at one stage mortgaging his house – and then had to ride out the shows' successes or failures, of which he's had both.

Atkins, who runs David Atkins Enterprises in Manly, had previously sold in Collaroy where he secured $2.65 million last December.

He was previously married to the ballet dancer Sheree da Costa, and they had two sons, Tobi, who is a musician, and Joey, an aspiring actor. David and Elli are also parents.

The executive chairman of the Sydney-based Caledonia Investments, Mark Nelson, and his wife, Louise have bought into Melbourne's most revered tower of power.

They have spent $2.41 million to buy into 99 Spring Street through Kay & Burton.

It last sold at $755,000 in 1994 when the Frenkel family bought very well given the 24th floor apartment had fetched $1.22 million five years prior.

The Nelsons have owned on Seven Shillings Beach, Point Piper since 2010 when they bought from Nigel Butler, heir to the Butler and Norman bottle merchants fortune, for $17.3 million through McGrath.

They'd previously had a two-year lease over the nearby, as yet unsold, Fairfax family residence, Elaine.

The Nelsons took over the Elaine lease from Cameron O'Reilly, the former mini-media industry player who has just listed his redundant Top of the Town, Darlinghurst, penthouse through Alison Coopes.

Overlooking the Sydney CBD, the penthouse was last traded in 2007 when bought from the Sutton car dealership family.

O'Reilly, the son of media magnate Tony O'Reilly, faces likely competition from MONA founder, David Walsh's Horizon penthouse offering.

The North Ryde estate of the late jazz musician Ken Flannery is set to be sold.

Ken, who played with the likes of Louise Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald during his career, owned the property with wife Patricia for decades.

The iconic fibre home was established in North Ryde's post war, returned soldiers estate.

Set on a level 556 sqm, the home has three bedrooms, one bathroom and a large covered deck which overlooks the lawns.

It has a price guide of $1.30 million and $1.35 million for its August 13 auction through McGrath Ryde agents Kim Toyer-Muttley and Sharon Skrabanich.

Ken founded the iconic Port Jackson Jazz Band, which was compared in an early edition of the Australian Woman's Weekly 'to be as iconic as the Sydney Harbour Bridge.'

He lived a humble life but had the experience of being taken to Hollywood in his early 20's by two professional American musicians, who paid for the trip after hearing him play in Australia.

Up until his death in January, Ken was still heard playing his trumpet by the neighbours.

Sydney entrepreneur Drew Muirhead has listed his recently refurbished Paddington terrace.

Spread over three levels, the home sits on a 108 sqm Comber Street parcel at the end of a terrace row.

It has three bedrooms, one bathroom and a garden courtyard with tandem parking for two cars.

It goes to auction August 20 through Ray White Surry Hills Alexandria agents Shaun Burdo and Jack McGhee who suggest spacious interiors are light filled with its due northern aspect.

There's bamboo flooring, soaring ceilings and plantation shutters.

Muirhead is founder and chief executive officer of the HouseHuntingAustralia.com.au website which was launched last year.

He long owned a Cottage Point waterfront that featured on the first series of Grand Designs Australia, which became Bora Bora House, a luxury hideaway rental.

Having purchased it for $1.7 million in 2005, Muirhead commissioned architect Richard Cole to completely redesign the home which was turned into a five bedroom Bali-inspired resort.

By the time the show aired, the Notting Lane home was the largest in the suburb and cost around $3 million to build.

The entreprenurial Muirhead then sought to secure 12 takers each with a share costing $650,000 in an attempt at fractional ownership.

But in the end his waterfront home sold to Westpac executive Paul Verschuer for $3.35 million.

Jarryd Hayne finds tenant for Darlinghurst investment property

$

Jarryd Hayne's impressive inner Sydney investment property has provided him with a steady income through his turbulent times, and will continue as he heads north.

Now confirmed to be playing his footy on the Gold Coast next year, the versatile footballer has just found another tenant for his renovated Darlinghurst terrace investment.

And at a much higher rental return.

Hayne paid $1,585,000 for the home in 2013 when he was still at the Parramatta Eels.

He'd listed the home for rent at $1,150 a week following his move to San Francisco when he took his career to the NFL.

However construction work next door lowered the rental income.

It's now just been re-let at a $1,450 a week asking price through Our Estates agent Dean Emerson (above).

The home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a separate dining area and a north facing terrace and was offered partly furnished.

Hayne also owns in Paddington, having spent $1.13 million in early 2013 on a narrow two bedrom terrace which has been a consistent rental since tenanted at $750 a week three years ago

He sold his St Peters family home for $995,000 to fund his NFL dream.

He made a tidy profit last year on the home that cost him $527,5000 in 2007 way back when Hayne was a 19-year old winger.

Set on 122sq m, the St Peters' house had three bedrooms and one bathroom, situated minutes to Sydenham and St Peter’s Station.

The two-storey 1900 Sutherland Street terrace was marketed as in need of some TLC.

Hayne, who played 176 games for Parramatta, also spent $388,750 on a Umina home for his mother in 2010.

His gross investment rental return at Darlinghurst now equates to around 4.76 percent - which sits way above the median yield of Sydney houses.

Gross rental yields are trending lower, according to the CoreLogic RP Data, with Sydney's gross rental yield currently at 2.9 percent for houses and apartments at 3.9 percent.

Darlinghurst houses enjoyed around 20 percent year on year price growth, with the median house price sitting at $1,695,000.

Should Hayne wish to buy up on the sandy Gold Coast shores, the median house price is $528,000 for the Brisbane and Gold Coast region.

Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull walk into pricey Point Piper open for inspection

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and wife Lucy were spotted post-election viewing an apartment in Point Piper, however it was not intended for them.

They were looking for their expat Singapore based son, Alex, a hedge fund manager, his wife, Yvonne Wang and their one year old daughter, Isla.

They dropped by the unrenovated 1960s apartment, (above) apparently on the spur of the moment, while taking an early afternoon stroll around their blue-ribbon neighbourhood.

They didn't turn up to the auction where 14 parties registered to bid from the 27 potential buyers who took contracts.

Last traded in 1966 at $60,200, it was knocked down to buyers who came from Kangaroo Point.

Lucy later told friends they weren't really in the market for an apartment and certainly not that expensive, as it sold for $4.3 million, some $1.2 million over reserve.

With the highest price in the block previously being $3.8 million next door, Belle Property Double Bay agent Albert Sassoon had marketed it as a 'house-sized apartment'.

It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large balcony with views of the Sydney Harbour.

Alex has recently launched a mobile phone application 'GoCatch' with Seek co-founder Paul Bassat. The taxi booking app has been backed by casino tycoon James Packer.

Alex worked for Goldman Sachs before joining a private equity firm in Singapore.

The buyer of racing identity "Melbourne Mick" Bartley's Rose Bay trophy, Villa Tivoli, has emerged as restaurant entrepreneur John Szangolies.

John and wife Heather snagged the harbourside estate in March for $16.85 million despite it being listed with more than $20 million hopes through Ray White's Ashley Biermann back in April 2015.

It was sold through Sotheby's International against Jaime Upton and Michael Pallier.

Set on 1258 sqm - one of the three largest frontages in Rose Bay, the circa 1902 home was offered for the fist time in four decades.

Bartley paid $80,500 for the property in 1967.

The entire ground floor is glass-fronted and opens on to a deep, contemporary balcony.

The five bedroom home includes a grand dining room, vast lounge and sitting room, sunroom, ground level home bar and a swimming pool.

Szangolies pocketed almost $200 million with the sale of his company, Urban Purveyor Group, to private equity group Quadrant.

He's going to have to spend some more if reports are believed. It's suggested Villa Tivoli will be a knock-down-rebuild.

The family can make a profit from a new build judging by previous sales in the area.

Fund manager Alwyn Heong spent $18.2 million for the waterfront residence in front of Villa Tivoli in 2006, and after extensive renovation sold it last year for $27.08 million to barrister Georgina Black and her husband Graham Edwards, chief of UK property group Telereal Trillium.

The Szangolies family own a Vaucluse mansion they paid $8.75 million for in 2010.

They bought the six bedroom home from Alceon partner Morris Symonds.

Bill Granger secures top sale in Tamarama

The expatriate celebrity chef Bill Granger scored the highest sale price at weekend auctions with the bullish $6.4 million sale of his three storey oceanfront home at Tamarama, in Sydney's coastal eastern suburbs.

It was sold through Goodyer Real Estate having last traded at $4.805 million in early 2015, reflecting 20 percent annualised price growth

The London-based Granger, who has Bills cafes now in Japan, Hawaii, Seoul and London, was holidaying in Cairns, so did not attend the damp Saturday auction which sold to a young couple of Asian background.

The increasing strength of both the Sydney and Melbourne auctions markets meant consecutive strongest year-to-date national success rates at weekend auctions.

With even lower interest rates assisting robust auction markets, the capital city preliminary clearance rate rose from 72 percent to around 75 percent in preliminary CoreLogic results from 1600 auction offerings.

Compared to the same week one year ago, auction activity is almost 1,000 listings down, CoreLogic spokesperson Kevin Brogan said, adding not all markets were seeing better success rates.

"Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane saw a rise in auction clearance rates, while across the remaining cities; week-on-week results show a fall in clearance rate," he said.

Melbourne's weekly clearance rate was up to 76 percent from 75 percent, but lower than last year’s 78 percent.

Melbourne's 722 residential property offerings were lower compared with last year's 1,085.

All Melbourne regions recorded a clearance rate above 70 percent, with the exclusion of inner east, at 69 percent.

Sydney secured its second weekend with 80 percent of reported results sold at auction, the 15th consecutive clearance rate above 70 percent for the city.

The 526 offerings compared to last week's 509 volume, but significantly lower than one year ago, when 1,103 Sydney homes went to auction.

The Eastern Suburbs (94.6 percent), City and Inner South (94.3 percent) and Northern Beaches (91.7 percent) were the strongest performing sub-regions by clearance rate.

At around 74 percent, Canberra was the strongest capital city outside the two auction engine rooms followed Adelaide's 67 percent, then Brisbane’s preliminary results showing a clearance rate of 59 percent, which is the cities strongest clearance rate for the year to date.

Although set to rise gradually over coming weekends, auction volumes will likely remain well below last year’s boom-time record numbers, according to Domain economist Dr Andrew Wilson, who anticipates listings will be similar to the 2014 and 2013 pre-spring markets.

Sydney Swans captain Kieren Jack sold his redundant Randwick home at weekend auction for $1,815,000.

Jack, who watched the auction while limbering up, was with partner, Charlotte Goodlet, then headed off to the SCG for the game against Port Adelaide.

He had paid $1.295 million for the 1920s Canberra Street home in 2012. There was bidding from two of the four registered parties after the $1.7 million opening bid.

After the auction Jack told one onlooker who congratulated him that it had been "stressful."

Set on 234 sqm, the dual level family home combines original Federation features and contemporary appointments.

It has two bedrooms, a recently renovated bathroom, modern kitchen and home office.

There's a low maintenance rear garden with barbecue area and treelined courtyard.

The home was sold by Australian Olympian turned estate agent Carl Wilson at Home Estate Agents. Carl represented Australia at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, competing in the swimming.

Jack has recently moved to his recently renovated Paddington home with Charlotte Goodlet.

He climbed onto the property ladder aged 22 just two years into his Sydney Swans career, buying a two bedroom Randwick apartment in 2009.

Set in a renovated block of nine units, Jack paid $570,000 for the apartment which was listed for rent at $560 a week in 2014. He retains the apartment on Mulwarree Avenue.

The Swans have are in line for another top eight finish, their 13th finals appearance in 14 years, having only missed the cut in 2009.
